Preparing for Your Visit with a Fertility Specialist

Many of us have preconceived ideas about how the baby making process should go. You might expect it to happen right away, or maybe you’re hoping to conceive in the most natural, intimate, and romantic way possible. But for lots of people, things don’t always go as planned – and our bodies might need a little help. That’s where Mosie Baby comes in.

One of the most common first steps for people struggling with infertility, and for LGBTQ+ couples - is artificial insemination (AI). AI is a clinical term for placing sperm into a the reproductive system, without intercourse.

There are two primary insemination techniques - intracervical insemination (ICI), and intrauterine insemination (IUI). ICI is the process of delivering sperm directly into the reproductive tract, at or near the cervical opening. IUI involves putting sperm directly into the uterus using a tube that goes through the cervix.

When considering insemination, you may or may not know, that you can actually do intracervical insemination (ICI) in the privacy and comfort of your own home. For some, using an at-home insemination kit, like Mosie, can be a cost effective option.

Whether you’re just starting to try – or you’ve been trying to conceive for a while without success – you might be ready to make an appointment with your doctor to talk about your next steps.

Here are a few ways you can prepare for a visit to see your doctor, or fertility specialist:

  • Your initial appointment will most likely include a consultation with your provider to review your medical history, and any evaluations, or treatments you may have already done. So, you should bring all that information, and any relevant medical records with you.
  • If possible, attend the appointment with your partner – or someone else that you trust. That way there are two people hearing the same information – an extra assurance that you won’t miss important information. Also, the doctor will likely have questions for your partner during the evaluation as well.
  • Take notes and bring a list of questions. It’s helpful if one of you takes notes during the consultation, because there’s usually a lot of information dispensed in a short amount of time. Write down all of your questions ahead of time, then check your list near the end of your appointment, to be sure everything was covered.
  • Self-advocate - try not to let any fears that you might have of being judged, prevent you from advocating for yourself, and listening to your own intuition about the right next steps for you and your family.

When you decide you’re ready to grow your family, it can be such an exciting time. Of course, it can also bring on some anxiety – and stress.  But when you’re equipped with all of the information, and support you need – it can make your journey much easier to manage. Please reach out to us if you have any additional questions, or need support. We’re here for you and we are rooting for your success!
